Piezoelectric Persulfate Activation for Wastewater Treatment

The widespread application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) using persulfate (PS) as a wastewater treatment method faces significant challenges due to the substantial energy consumption and reliance on chemical-intensive activation methods. These methods often involve transition metal ions and ultraviolet radiation, rendering broad adoption nearly unattainable.

Recognizing the great potential of PS-AOPs, researchers from Jinan University in China explored the potential of an energy-efficient way to activate PS. This activation method, known as the piezoelectric effect, taps into the innate piezoelectric characteristics of certain materials.

“Piezoelectric activation of persulfate represents a paradigm shift in water treatment technology. It not only addresses the efficiency and environmental concerns associated with traditional methods but also opens up new pathways for using renewable energy sources,” said Dr. Mingshan Zhu.

Dr. Zhu and his team elucidated in their study, published in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology, how a piezoelectric material can generate energy under external mechanical forces. They also highlighted how environmental energies from wind, tide, sound, water flow, and atmospheric forces could induce piezoelectricity, which can activate PS and degrade contaminants in wastewater, offering a practical and sustainable solution.
