New Water Treatment Permanently Destroys PFAS Particles

A team of engineers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) developed a new method of safely, efficiently, and permanently destroying per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) particles in drinking water.

Led by Dr. Madijd Mohseni, the team manufactured a regenerable and reusable adsorbing material that captures and holds PFAS particles in drinking water and water supply. Using special photochemical and electrochemical techniques also developed by the team, the water treatment destroys all collected PFAS particles.

“Our adsorbing media captures up to 99 per cent of PFAS particles and can also be regenerated and potentially reused. This means that when we scrub off the PFAS from these materials, we do not end up with more highly toxic solid waste that will be another major environmental challenge,” said Dr. Mohseni.

With the material’s capability to be reused and regenerated, Dr. Mohseni believes that their newly developed water treatment will benefit people in small communities that lack advanced technology and solutions for removing and eradicating PFAS.
