New Technology Could Tap Into a Virtually Limitless Supply of Fresh Water

New research shows a promising technology that can address freshwater scarcity in the world and could work with purification systems to provide the increasing global population with clean drinking water.

Spearheaded by Afeefa Rahman, Praveen Kumar, and Francina Dominguez from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the study, published in Scientific Reports, proposes building an extraction system that converts water vapor collected from the ocean surface into water.

It will be 100 meters tall and 210 meters wide, running on renewable solar or wind energy. No specific designs are final, but the study reveals that one of the 14 study sites could provide around 500,000 people with the average daily drinking water needs.

While this system focuses on increasing the global freshwater supply, it can be improved by incorporating sustainable water purification methods to ensure the collected water is free of harmful contaminants.
