Solar Mat Cleans Water and Generates Clean Energy

Researchers from Ohio State University have developed a floating device that could transform how we clean polluted water. This new solar-activated nanomat looks like a beach mat floating on water and removes harmful pollutants while also generating power from sunlight.

At the heart of the technology is a special material made from titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanofibers. These fibers are created through a process called electrospinning, which uses electrical forces to form ultra-fine threads. Once assembled into a mat, the material floats on the water's surface and uses sunlight to start a chemical reaction known as photocatalysis, which breaks down toxic substances found in polluted water.

The team added copper to the fibers to make the material more effective. Normally, titanium dioxide only responds to ultraviolet (UV) light. But with copper, the mat can now absorb visible light.

Pelagia-Iren Gouma, the study's lead author and an Ohio State professor, said:

"When titanium dioxide absorbs light, electrons are formed that oxidize water and attack pollutants, slowly destroying them until they become benign. When copper is added, that process is supercharged, making it even more effective."

The nanomats are an excellent alternative to existing water purification methods. They are easy to use, lightweight, reusable, and do not require complex filters or replacements. They can also be used on different bodies of water, such as lakes or rivers, near areas where access to clean water is limited.

Compared to other water purification methods, this solar mat stands out. For instance, Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) uses plastic bottles and UV light to kill bacteria but doesn't remove chemical pollutants. Other solutions use nanoparticles that need to be filtered out after use, adding extra steps. Some advanced technologies, like graphene-based filters or floating photoreactors, offer specific benefits but can be challenging to scale up.
