Scientists Reveal Key Insights Into Emerging Water Purification Technology

An article released by Science Daily last August features scientists and engineers from CSU that uncovered why certain membrane design work better than others.

Utilizing their complementary expertise, Tiezheng Tiong, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, worked together with Arun Kota, a materials scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, to discover key insights behind designing the perfect membrane.

In the membrane distillation process, water vapor passes through the membrane and gets separated from the contaminants. Even though membrane distillation holds its promise, it doesn’t work perfectly. In their experiments, CSU researchers devise the fundamentals into why certain membrane designs used in membrane distillation work better than others.

Furthermore, new insights uncovered by the CSU experts could help advance the water purification technology this knowledge can guide the future design of membranes used in membrane distillation.

Check the full article here to dive deeper on the tradeoff between hydrophobic vs. omniphobic membranes that could help reveal the core challenge around making membrane distillation a successful technology.
