Purifying Wastewater Using Sunlight, Vibrations & AI

A new, environmentally friendly, reusable, and cost-effective filter designed to decontaminate wastewater using sunlight and gentle vibrations has been developed by researchers from India's Institute of Nanoscience and Technology (INST) using AI models.

Methylene Blue and Congo Red are harmful dyes often found in the wastewater expelled by various industries. These chemicals discolor rivers, threaten ecosystems, and endanger human health as they can cause skin disorders and respiratory issues.

Unfortunately, the wastewater filtration solutions currently used to remove these harmful dyes and other pollutants are not sustainable as they usually rely on electrochemical treatments and ozone-based oxidation, which require more energy and expensive chemicals. With this study, however, a promising sustainable solution may soon become available.

The new filter design features a 3D-printed scaffold made from biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and coated with Bismuth Ferrite (BiFeO₃). PLA can assist in catalytic reactions, while BiFeO₃ uses light and mechanical energy to break down pollutants.

The combination of PLA and BiFeO₃ produces a process called piezo-photocatalysis, which uses sunlight and vibrations to activate the catalyst. Even when solar power falls short, the vibrations can keep the cleaning process going.

Researchers experimented with the synthesis of the catalyst and the development of the 3D-printed scaffolds. They improved the material coating and evaluated dye degradation under various conditions. They even used machine learning models to predict the performance of the filter.

After conducting tests, the system has surpassed most advanced treatment methods to date, removing nearly 99% of Congo Red and over 74% of Methylene Blue from wastewater.
